Fashion Overdose perhaps...

THE CITIZENS OF THIS WORLD  are divided into two categories - the stylish set and the normal people. Well, to the fashion set, at least. Don't get me wrong. I'm not talking about folks who take pride in the way they look. Rather, this class of fashion "elites" are those who think they are above everyone else and judge people purely by which season's Ferragamo lace-ups they have on their feet.

The one issue I have with these fashion snobs is the constant need to be styled all the time. Most days, they look like they belong with the residents of Capitol City in the Hunger Games  fully decked in Capitol Couture to the point that it invites ridicule and scorn. Perhaps working in the fashion industry affords their inner Princess Beatrice more opportunities to air their toilet seats.

Seemingly, these "fashionista" live in a dimension parallel to ours ; we walk the same earth but we see very different things. To us, we look perfectly acceptable, but to them, we are style plebeians.

Someone once quoted the "this stuff" speech by Miranda Priestly from Seminal fashion snob fashion film The Devil Wears Prada. If you haven't got the clue as to what I'm referring to, look it up on the YouTube. Its frequently used to validate the industry and elevate it on a pedestal higher than Charlotte Olympia heels. In fact, you could replace certain words in the speech with mundane words like "pencils" and "China" and that speech would be applicable to every other industry. Do people seriously think the revolves around the clothes we wear?

A colleague and I were discussing how we people working in an industry that thrives for fashion, also see the world differently from others. We may not judge them on the brands they wear but we nitpick the minute details like the cut of their jeans, the 10-year-old school T-shirts that have been worn down to the muslin and their Crocs. There is no excuse for Crocs. Ever. I digress, but you get my drift. Does prolonged exposure to fashion turn one into snob?

Sure, people should dress appropriately and take pride in the way they look  a good sense of style goes a long way. I also believe someone who makes the effort to dress up deserves more attention than the dude who throws on cargo shorts and slippers. But let's not forget that too much of something is rarely a good thing.

The best way to judge someone's style is through the eyes of an average man standing on the outer rims of the fashion universe. If he says you look good in your attire, you probably look decent enough for the real world. But if he is asking what the fuck you are wearing, it's time for a review. Check out wtfywt.tumblr.com and you will know what I'm talking about.
