With nail art reaching dizzying levels of popularity(and increasingly outrageous, gravity-defying dimensions), it's high time to return to basics.
Rihanna likes her bright, cheeky and Wicked Witch-worthy length, while Lady GaGa has a soft spot for Gothic design and lots of bling. Whichever way you like it (and the list is pretty much endless), nail art has exploded off the performance stage and into the mainstream, which means that everyone from the teens on Orchard Road to the administrative auntie at the office is sporting some kind of elaborate nail design.
I'll just come right out say that I'm not a fans of nail art. Although I can (and do) appreciate the whimsical quality of a pretty or graphic pattern, or added drama of glittery tips or strategically placed Swarovski crystal embellishments, I draw a line at the kitschy (bumblebee nails, anyone?) and three-dimensional designs. It;s already a challenge getting dressed up in the mornings in the mad dash to work without running the risk of stabbing oneself in the eye with an outward-jutting 3D manicure.
You might ask, what's wrong with having a little fun with your manicure? They're just nails anyway. True, like accessories, your manicure can lend an additional element to your look - it even completes the outfits. And I'm all for self-expression through a creative manicure - from reverse Frenchies to neon-coloured Mondrian patterns to the on-trend leather-textured nail looks. But honestly, it's difficult to think of an outfits that would complement nailfeaturing a 3D Eiffel Tower on each talon (yes, this does exists).
And it seems like the fashion gods are getting increasingly fatigues with tricked-out nails, too, if the slew of nude manicure on the runways is any indication. Sophisticated, ageless, visually elongating and ultra-flattering on almost everyone, the new nude manicure is a trend that is here to stay. It's possible the strongest nail trend that will likely stay on the top for long. Nails are growing up, and thank heavens for that. Peace - (>_^)v
